FAQ

What eBook formats do you offer?

The three popular Ebook File Formats available on Vanished Press to support reading on desktop computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones:

1. PDF
2. EPUB
3. KINDLE

Each of these will require an appropriate digital book Reader app or utility to be installed on your device.

Some ebooks on Vanished Press have only one or two formats. Usually because the ebook is requires a fixed layout for graphics, a good example is magazines, cookbooks or comics.

1. PDF (.pdf)
PDF stands for Portable Document Format created by Adobe, Portable Document Format is now an open-standard and PDF is the most preferred downloadable file on Vanished Books.

We recommend using Adobe Acrobat Reader to open and read PDFs on your device, which is free of charge. Adobe Reader is full of excellent features, like Read Aloud and Text Reflow.

2. EPUB (.epub)
EPUB stands for Electronic Publication. An ePub is a Zip file that contains html files, images, stylesheets and other files. EPub is supported by the majority of e-book Reader utilities with the exception of Amazon Kindle.

3. KINDLE (.mobi, .azw, .azw3)
The Kindle format was originally created only for Amazon Kindle devices. Amazon’s proprietary file-types for reading books on a Kindle device are AZW, AZW3, and MOBI, all of which reflow text automatically. Although the latest generation Kindles now also support PDF, they do not currently support ePub. You don’t need a Kindle device to read the ebooks you download from Vanished Books. You can download the Kindle App for reading on almost all devices.

How do I download an eBook?

I can't find the downloaded eBook file on my Computer, where is it?
If you are using a Windows computer your files will likely save directly to your 'Downloads' folder. To save files to your desktop or a different location, right-click and select 'Save as'.

How do I download eBooks to a Kindle device?
Kindle is an Amazon product and tied to their service: it is not in their interest to make it easy for you to download kindle books outside of their store. Kindle device or app users can download eBooks (pdf or mobi) direct to their computer, then transfer them to their device via usb cable.

How do I open a PDF, ePub or Kindle book on my device?
Please ensure you have the latest version of your favourite eBook Reader installed on your computer or handheld device.

How do I get eBooks to load onto my eReader?
We don't offer support for individual devices. Please read your manual carefully and check online for solutions to any problems you may have.

Do I need a licence?

You will find three licence types on Vanished Press:

Standard Copyright
Some eBooks on Vanished Books are Copyright protected works. Two of the major acts that offer legal protection of an author's intellectual property rights are the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 in the United Kingdom and The Copyright Act of 1976 in the United States of America, and for other countries there are international treaties that will automatically protect literary and creative work.

Creative Commons
These eBooks are published under a specific licence, which is a set of conditions which may allow you to copy, share, remix and make derivative works. However, some of the author's legal rights as Copyright holder still apply and you must read and abide by the terms of the actual Creative Commons licence appearing inside each work.

Public Domain
These eBooks have no restrictions. If no laws establish proprietary rights over a work to restrict its use by the public at large; typically when Copyright has lapsed or has deliberately been waived by the author, it is deemed to be in the Public Domain. However, while the text may be in the Public Domain, as with Creative Commons books, cover art and design features may be protected separately by standard Copyright.
